When I chose the
cover for my novel, The Beautiful Evil, I thought I'd found the perfect image.
The Beautiful Evil, an oxymoron, is another name for the mythological woman,
Pandora. She opened a vase (or box) releasing demons into the world. The
Beautiful Evil, based on the Pandora myth, has a similar concept. Consequently,
I decided this would be a perfect title.
The image on the
cover of The Beautiful Evil represents one of the demons who disguises herself
as a beautiful fairy. Check out the original cover, and see what I mean. NEW COVER ORIGINAL: COVER
I received positive
feedback with the general sentiment that this cover would provoke customer
attention. Great!
Then, I won an
internet contest. The prize? A mentor to help increase book sales. (The Awesome Jeff Bennington) One of the
first things he recommended was that I change the book cover. It's not that he
didn't like the original cover, because he liked it. A lot. Nevertheless, he
felt the cover looked more like a fantasy novel then a suspenseful,
psychological thriller. Upon reflection, I
also realized that the cover could easily translate to a YA book. With this in
mind, I decided to move forward with the new cover. Along with this, I
optimized my Amazon Kindle "free days" by advertising on Kindle
Nation Daily, Digital Books Today, Kindle Book Review and World Literary Café.
Have my sales
improved? Think how many books I averaged before the cover change and multiply
by 30. Not bad. On my first Kindle "free day" over 14,000 people
downloaded the ebook.
How much did the
cover change have to do with the sales, I don't know. I do know this—when
people look at the new cover, it seems that they are more compelled to open the
book ... and that's what it's all about. Well, that and the hokey pokey.
